Hunter X Hunter: Top 10 Fan-Favorite Characters (According To Lj List)
Hunter X Hunter might have a relatively small cast when compared to similar anime series, but 10 of its characters still make strong showings on MAL.

Series like Hunter x Hunter often feature small main casts with tons of supporting characters, since the characters tend to be constantly moving around and meeting new people. Some of these characters are more memorable than others and catch the eyes of fans in a way that sometimes not even the main characters are able to.
With regard to fans adding their characters to their favorites lists on Lj List, it’s very clear which characters come out on top when it comes to how fans feel about them. There are some surprisingly popular characters and also some characters that surprisingly didn’t make the cut.

Feitan Pohtoh (2,425)
It’s easy to see just by looking at Feitan Pohtoh why he’s popular with fans. He looks cool in all black and has the same smoldering, bored look and minimal speech, complete with dark hair, that Naruto fans will recognize in a character like Sasuke.
He is a member of the Phantom Troupe of thieves and works as their interrogator and torture artist, and in this role, he can be seen showing real signs of sadism, which make for an interesting character.

Neferpitou (3,002)
Pitou is another character for whom it is somewhat obvious why fans are drawn to her. Since she’s a cat-humanoid Chimera Ant so she is essentially a cat girl, complete with ears, a tail, and a cat mouth that always seems curved up into a smile.
She has a very feline-like attitude as well, as she gets curious and distracted by things easily and often leaves her post as a Royal Guard by running off to play.

Isaac Netero (3,281)
Isaac Netero is actually something of a surprise choice for a fan-favorite character. He’s an old man, which generally means a character to be dismissed. However, he is also incredibly strong, and is rather muscular, looking much younger than his age in his body if not in his face and hair.
He also doesn’t really act like a typical old man in that he is very energetic and playful, and he likes to play tricks on his Hunters, like giving them assignments with impossible deadlines.

Leorio Paradinight (5,021)
Leorio Paradinight looks like a cross between a character from a Shinichiro Watanabe anime and Lupin III, which already makes him a great candidate for a fan-favorite character. The way he dresses and behaves when viewers are first introduced to him shows him to be an unlikable narcissist who is obsessed with money and power.
But this seems to be a put-on act, as he also has a great desire to help the poor as a doctor and takes the role of a big brother in group situations.

Chrollo Lucilfer (6,009)
Chrollo Lucilfer has one of the best character designs in Hunter x Hunter and honestly looks like he would be better suited as a Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure villain. He is a charismatic villain and acts as a leader for the Phantom Troupe, who otherwise have personalities not really suited for team-building.
While he’s absolutely an evil person, he is also deeply interesting, with a lot of thoughts about the nature of humanity and why people do what they do— including himself.

Meruem (11,223)
Meruem with nen
It’s not very surprising that so many villains have made it into the top 10 of fan favorite characters. Villains often have room to play with ideas about human nature, and very few are presented with the same personality traits or ways of being evil.
Meruem is a great example of a villain who has caught fans’ attention, partially because of his position as a great villain and partially because he has something of a change of heart when he befriends a human girl.

Kurapika (15,984)
Kurapika
Another character on this list with a backstory similar to Sasuke, a fan favorite character from another series, Kurapika is a teenage hunter who is intelligent and cool under pressure. He lost his family at the age of 12 and is driven by his pursuit of vengeance for their deaths.
He doesn’t get close to many people due to this goal, but he also manages to have relationships in which he wants his friends to be happy.

Gon Freecss (19,112)
Gon Freecss is the main character of Hunter x Hunter, so it’s no surprise that he’s made it to the top three of a list of fan favorite characters. The fact that he isn’t number one though isn’t much of a surprise, since main characters always tend to be less interesting than side characters.
Still, Gon’s upbeat, can-do attitude and thirst for adventure making him an easy character to love, and his determination to get stronger make him a great shonen hero.

Hisoka Morow (30,590)
Hisoka Morow is the highest ranking villain on this list, as a member of the Phantom Troupe. He, like Lucilfer, looks like he would be very comfortable serving as a villain in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, and his personality likewise makes him suited to it.
He loves to fight in combat, especially against those who are very powerful, and he is very cool, calm, and collected in most situations, focusing on his enjoyment of battle and his desire to see others suffer for his amusement.

Killua Zoldyck (67,947)
Killua Zoldyck is Gon Freecss’ best friend and therefore one of the main characters of the series. He begins the series as a cheerful boy who wants to be a Hunter, and he has a serious sweet tooth that is incredibly charming.
He’s also slightly more complicated than Gon, as he sometimes approaches battle with a ruthlessness that one might not expect from someone so young. Indeed, he often seems bloodthirsty. But Gon’s good influence helps him overcome these feelings, and his character arc is hard to beat.
