Naruto: 10 Characters Who Should Invest In Taijutsu

The Naruto series’ system of combat can be subdivided into three main pillars: Ninjutsu, which harnesses the user’s chakra to unleash a myriad of ninja wizardry; genjutsu, which channels said chakra into illusions and techniques of the spiritual dimension; and finally, taijutsu, which is effectively martial arts, but a tad cooler.

Ninjutsu and genjutsu are well-received among the shinobi for their potency. First things first, they are much more efficient in combat and they generally take less time to polish. Taijutsu, on the other hand, requires tedious training to flourish beyond the convenience line. Taijutsu is harder to manage, but it does not make it any less important than its counterparts. Conversely, reaching a balanced state between taijutsu and ninjutsu can elevate about any shinobi to soaring heights.

10.

Shikamaru Nara

It’s no news that Shikamaru is more concerned with the brains department rather than the brawns. His combat prowess is very much unignorable, that said, he is in no way undefeatable on his own. In fact, he leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to throwing hands and kicks.

During combat, Shikamaru mainly relies on strategic play augmented by his Shadow Binding Technique. With a little sprinkle of taijutsu, his strength could experience a massive leap.

9

Tenten

Tenten’s entire fighting style is tailored around weapons. Her entire self is drowning in weaponry, all the way from mini-kunais to gigantic shurikens; she is more or less a walking armory.

And her being a walking armory is a weakness in and of itself. Once she is out of weapons to toss around, it would be game over for her. Instead of overlying on ninja tools, sharpening her own skills could grant more benefits than one would expect.

Ino Yamanaka

Medic shinobi are strictly forbidden from hitting the frontlines, and right behind them are the sensory-type ninja. Ino is a combination of the two; her sensory skills are well above-average and her medic skills include basics.

Which is the more reason to learn advanced taijutsu. Ino’s repertoire of offensive jutsu comprises only mind-assaulting techniques. Those with strong wills could easily nullify all of her attempts. Taijutsu could really shine in these unforeseen case scenarios.

7

Suigetsu Hozuki

Suigetsu was one of Sasuke’s minions for the longest time. He is a member of the Hozuki clan, a shinobi clan based in Kirigakure. ‘Liquidification’ is the signature technique of the clan, those concerned can turn their bodies into liquid -- nullifying physical attacks during the process.

It should be noted that Suigetsu already is adept in close-quarter combat. That said, his expertise lays in swordsmanship rather than hand-to-hand combat. Many of the times in which he was disarmed ended badly for him.

6

Jugo

Despite being a close-ranged fighter, Jugo’s taijutsu is severely lacking in the finesse department. True taijutsu is all about redirecting the opponent’s force back to themselves. In that regard, Jugo’s taijutsu could use some refinement.

Then again, Jugo’s violent taijutsu is inseparable from his identity. He performs the best when he is angry; an inconvenient setback that severely limits his prospects.

5

Gaara

Gaara might as well be one of the most formidable long-range combatants. He rarely ever leaves his comfort zone to engage with the opponent in a one-on-one brawl. Naturally, Gaara being unable to hit it and kick it off is not necessarily a weakness. Against most opponents, he would perform just fine.

That said, it is against the taijutsu masters where his downsides make themselves apparent. His sand will not be able to keep up with the speed of the likes of Might Guy.

4

Kankuro

It would be idiotic for a puppeteer to throw one of their foremost strengths out of the window for some cheap frontline adrenaline rush -- it wouldn’t make sense. That itself defeats the entire purpose of puppeteering.

Having said so, one can never be too careful. Having little to no taijutsu experience would be an exploitable weakness to the capable shinobi. Sasori overcame said weakness by turning himself into a puppet.

3

Hidan

Besides his immortal body and bizarre voodoo arts, Hidan is an empty husk of a shinobi. His ninjutsu and taijutsu are subpar at best, without his aforementioned trump cards, he would be more or less on a chunin level.

If he were to incorporate advanced and elaborate taijutsu instead of his wacky scythe style, he would certainly see more results. After all, weapons are but larger toys for the inexperienced.

2

Temari

Temari’s fighting style is one of the more peculiar ones. Her entire style is centered around her gigantic fan, very inflexible, to say the least. In the unlikely event of her getting disarmed, her combat prowess will witness a sharp fall.

To counter this, she’d have to invest more in taijutsu. As she is now, she is only capable of dodging and momentary fending off a close-ranged enemy. Any further close-quarter engagement will severely limit her limbs.

1

Sai

For the most part, Sai is a spy type of ninja concerned the most with intel-gathering. All of his previous missions were tailored around espionage and infiltration. And in the case of him getting compromised, escaping would be first on his priority list.

For that reason, Sai rarely engaged in taijutsu confrontations outside of training. Despite having trained on the subject, his real-life experience are most likely on the lacking side. Sharpening his skills every now and then would only do him good.
