Gon winning when he shouldnt

The show Hunter X Hunter has Gon overcome many challenges like any good shonen anime would. He fights to push forward in the world and find his dad, and several times along the way he meets good friends that help guide him towards getting stronger.

During his trials, there were plenty of times Gon came upon a challenge that was too great for him to overcome. Oddly enough, he was able to overcome a good number of these challenges despite clearly not being up to the task.

Binolt

Binolt Greed Island

Gon and Killua ran into Binolt while they were traveling with Bisky on Greed Island. If it weren't for Bisky being far stronger than she appeared, Binolt would have easily killed Gon and Killua. However, Gon and Killua were able to train against a weakened Binolt for several days until they were able to finally defeat him one-on-one.

If it weren't for Bisky and a week or two of training, Gon never would've stood a chance.

Hanzo

Hanzo was a participant in the Hunter Exam along with Gon. In the final round of the exam, participants had to face off against each other in a duel to see who would pass the exam. Hanzo greatly outmatched Gon, and proved that multiple times by leaving the young protagonist in a broken and bloody mess.

Despite his condition, Gon refused to concede the fight and fought on despite his injuries. Eventually Hanzo conceded to the weaker Gon and allowed him to win thanks to a growing respect for him.

Netero

In between the second and third stages of the Hunter Exam, Chairman Netero challenged the two boys to a friendly game of keep-away where Netero could only use a single hand. He greatly outclassed Gon and Killua and actually made the young Zoldyck quit out of frustration.

Gon kept trying and eventually made an unexpected play to force Netero to use his other hand. Gon promptly collapsed and although he didn't steal the ball, in a way he did win over Netero.

Gido

Gido was a large obstacle that Gon had to overcome in Heaven's Arena. Without the proper use of Nen, Gon didn't stand a chance the first time he fought Gido and ended up being severely injured.

He was clearly outclassed, but after training his Nen and figuring out Gido's fighting style he was able to come out on top during their rematch. In the original fight, he simply didn't stand a chance.

6

Hisoka

Hisoka was the primary antagonist during the Hunter Exam and proved to be one of the strongest competitors. Unfortunately for Gon, he was tasked with stealing Hisoka's tag which he knew could potentially result in him being killed.

He trained for hours with his fishing rod and subconsciously suppressed his aura so that he could sneak up on Hisoka and succeed in stealing the tag. Despite the odds stacked against him, Gon came out on top.

5

Hisoka Again

Hisoka came back during Heaven's Arena after previously challenging Gon to land a hit on him in order to properly earn the tag from the earlier Hunter Exam. Even with Gon learning the basics of Nen at this point, Hisoka was able to casually toy with him and avoid being hit.

Gon came up with a complex strategy that allowed him to finally land the hit he had been seeking. He lost the fight overall, but in that moment he had won.

4

Nobunaga

For a brief period of time, Gon and Killua were captured by the criminal group known as the Phantom Troupe. They were being questioned on their knowledge of the "chain user" otherwise known as Kurapika.

While Gon was being questioned, Nobunaga arm wrestled him and beat him repeatedly despite Gon being quite strong. Eventually enraged by the nonchalant attitude the Troupe had to murder, Gon ends up winning the next match.

3

Pitou

Pitou was a member of the royal guard, and unknowingly made herself Gon's number one enemy when she killed Kite. Gon went mad once he finally confronted her again, but was being pushed along by the glimmer of hope that she could heal Kite. She led him away from the King before she revealed that she could not heal Kite, and was ready to kill him until he used all of his Nen to defeat her.

If he hadn't resorted to giving up his life to gain power, Pitou would have defeated him easily despite his rage.

2

Genthru

While Gon and Killua were in Greed Island, someone called the Bomber was going around and killing the other players. The Bomber ended up being Genthru, and he had to be stopped before Gon could complete Greed Island and find his father.

Genthru was much stronger than Gon and a better fighter, and the only reason Gon was able to beat him was through a ton of previous planning and overconfidence from Genthru himself.

1

Razor

In order to get a rare card on Greed Island, Gon needed to get a group together to face off against Razor's crew. The series of events ended in an intense game of dodgeball with Razor clearly being the strongest person on the court.

Despite being clear underdogs, Gon and his team were able to just barely beat Razor before Gon passed out from overusing his Nen. If there was any match he should've lost but won, it was against Razor.
